These bugs I'm posting today have been a wonder of mine since I was a child. I was very fortunate as a child to have the fortunate attribute of living only 10 steps from the lake. All summer long I would watch them walk on the water fascinated with what they could do and could not. Just think if we could walk on water....what a wonderful concept that would be. I took the time to really get a close shot of these Water Skaters on how their legs are shaped and how they can just sit on the water. Amazing little bugs (animals) I'm not too sure what they do or their purpose but I'm sure it is something amazing and important. All life has a purpose...it's just hard to determine what that can be sometimes. This is one example of that.
Really great close up photos.
ReplyDeletePond Skaters or common water-strider (as they are known here) are fascinating. There is a short write up about them on the BBC web site.

Until I read that I didn't know that they can fly.
Superb pictures. I love the last one!
ReplyDeleteCrista, thanks for the compliment on my header. I just couldn't make up my mind on that for the longest time. I still waffle about the background color over. Perhaps I'll do something like what you have. I don't know. You always have the most unique photos of things on your blog. Love that. Talk to you soon.
ReplyDeleteGreat images Crista that clearly show how they use the surface water tension to 'walk on water' while feeling for movement that could indicate a meal. FAB
ReplyDeleteThe little guys in life are the ones who help us sustain life itself is the way I look at all of these little creatures.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I haven't been able to get my followers to show up on my blog the past two days. Have you had any problems with that on your site. Let me know. Thanks Crista. Carol
Carol ~ I think all of blogger is having the same problems with their followers disapearing...I'm hopeful that this is a temp problem since all of us are having the same issue.
ReplyDeleteJohn ~ Now that is interesting I would have never known that they can fly. I will have to check out that web site tonight and see for myself. Very interesting indeed.
Chris ~ Thanks I like the last one too.. Looks like it has head lights with how the sun is catching the water. I like that :)
Frank ~ Good analogy....I wouldn't have thought water has tension...perhaps that's how they do it...walking on water. Hmmmmm...more investigations are required I think.
I always called them Water Striders. Both names seem to fit what they do! They always make such a strange sight...so little but their "footprints" make them look like they have big feet :-) The way they fight the current to stay where they are is interesting to watch.
