This Little Bird ~ Red Breasted Nuthatch

On Sunday my family and I went out for the afternoon when I got home from work and headed out to Beacon Hill Park. Beacon Hill Park is one of our more popular parks that is located down town Victoria. The park also boarders onto the sea side walk way which would take you down to the break water where the Cruise ships dock when they come into town. My objective was to try to spot some birds before they start to migrate to warmer locations for the winter. I didn't really have much success, but I did spot this little red breasted Nuthatch up at the very top of a tree all fluffed out and making it's usual beeping noise that they make. They sound like little broken horns don't they. I like the sound and was drawn to it's location because of it. My husband though will argue that this isn't a Nuthatch but I'm positive that it is....if I'm wrong let me know guys...some of you are expert birders and would know in a heart beat if I was wrong. In this first image I was having a little fun and wanted to give this bird an aged look. It's the same image at the bottom. Just wanted to add a little texture into this shot...mainly because the bright blue sky was just so intense that I wanted to tone it down and show off a little more detailing on the bird. Rather than featuring the sky. I really like the effect.... Warm feeling.

  1. hi crista, beautiful header picture, I love it, not sure what the bird is, I know that I have never seen one. Glad you found time for a family outing. Until next time, be well. c

  2. Ohhhhh.....a little Red-breasted Nuthatch. I LOVE these birds. They are few and far between down here. Sometimes we have influxes of them, but usually they are a rarity. I've seen them at the Cincy Nature Center several times, but never in my backyard. Your photos are lovely. I HOPE I get to see one this winter. I doubt I'll ever get close enough for a photo though...and I love your new banner photo. It screams fall!

  3. Hi Cirsta,
I definitively prefer the colored ones. The two last shots are great. We do not have them in Iceland, you know that but we do in France. I've seen many of them, but was not really able to get a nice shot of them!!

  5. Cinner ~ Thanks I'm tring to remember time for me and my family hard though. Thank you for your kind words and thoughts

Kelly ~ I know my girl that you love these birds and I will cross my fingers that you get a photo of one this year. I will send them down to you :) We have lots here.

Chris ~ Yes the color shots are nice...bright but nice. Nuthatches are very quick and I agree that they are a challenge to get a good shot of. But this was my lucky day...this one was accually sitting still and I managed to get a few shots off. Not on the right setting...but I didn't care. :)

Carol ~ Thank you I'm glad you like the Autumn Leave photo. I love fall Carol, my favorite time of year for me. This is the first time I did this with my photo giving the bird a different look...just wanted to see what it would look like. Definately will pop by tonight to check out what you've posted so far for your trip :)

  6. The Red-breasted Nuthatches are so SO cute! I know what you mean about the little horn honk sound that they make. We only see them every few years in the winter, and they are about due to make an appearance at our feeders this year. That would be great, but if that happens, that means the weather's bad up north, and I wouldn't wish a bad winter on my Canadian friend!
