Have you ever noticed that when you have the opportunity to go for a walk in a very wooded forest where very little light filters onto the forest floor that you can smell that lovely rich aroma in the air. The smell of wood, moisture and freshness? I love that smell and I love everything that the forest provides for all life. One example of this process is Fungus it just loves the fallen old trees that have made the forest floor their final resting place that provides living spaces for bugs, grubs, Gastropods and mainly any living thing that relies on these process to occur. My favorite is the toadstool mainly for it's unquestionable beauty. It totally takes advantage of the moisture and lack of light in the soft spongy wood of dead trees....I just love the contrast from the decomposing of wood with life living....
...I love Fungus and Lichens too....love stumbling across interesting forms in the woods (so did Beatrix Potter!).
