My post today is about Snapping Turtles...yes you know the ones everyone does. The cute little turtles you see in pet stores everywhere. But what most people don't know is that they grow...yes imagine that ...those cute little turtles get quite a bit bigger and soon grow out of their tanks causing people to abandon them. Here in Victoria we have alot of snapping turtles that now live in our parks, ponds, bogs...because people forget when they buy pets as babies that they grow...now we have problems with them. They will attack baby birds that swim in those ponds....sad really they are a lovely looking Turtle but a problem none the less. Makes me wish that people stop and think if the animal they are buying really is appropriate for them. Just like Parrots ....A huge responsibility that people just don't realize...Sigh...I think I'm going into a rant..I will stop now.Thursday, July 2, 2009

Unfortunately I think many countries have problems with the unofficial introduction of various species. It can have devastating consequences on the native wildlife.

Ahhhh...thanks John. I'm really passionate about animals but in their natural habitat. There are so many animal species that have been introduced to environments that really aren't able to sustain them. I just get frustrated with human ignorance. Yes I know it's easy to fall in love with a lovely image...a baby. But we need to step back and really think. Is this for me? or for the animal. Mostly it's us fulfiling our needs first over the animals needs. That's why I like photography. I can take the picture in the animals environment and walk away admire it later and for years to come. Knowing I haven't done any damage at all.
